New portrait shoot- Stacie

Shot these for fun. Went "back to basics" shooting some natural light stuff intended to be converted into black and white. OK, so I used some lights in a few :)

Broke out some hot lights in the studio, it had been awhile. Thanks to DC-based photographer and all around good guy Mike Oliver for letting me try out some of his gear.

Guess how you know your camera shutter is going bad?

You start seeing a big black strip in the middle of your photos. Yikes! I'm very thankful for being a Canon CPS member. Totally worth it! Should have the camera back in a week or so from my ship date.

UPDATE: Apparently it costs $247.75 to replace your camera shutter through Canon. I fedex'd my body overnight. They sent me an estimate the same day they received it, and had it repaired and shipped out the next day. WOO HOO! Go CPS (Canon Professional Services) membership! GO! That was really fast

Canon announces the new G10

I love my little Canon G9, but this new G10 looks pretty sweet with a $499 retail price, 14 megapixels, raw file capability, video, and hot shoe so you can pop a Canon Speedlight external flash on there.

According to Canon:
Canon's Top-Range Compact Digital.
Advanced amateur photographers are a discerning group, and they've flocked to Canon's G-Series for its ability to meet and exceed their demands. The third-generation PowerShot G10 is a stunning successor, loaded with uncompromising specs like 14.7 megapixels, a 28mm wide-angle lens, and Canon's new DIGIC 4 Image Processor for notably improved face and motion detection. -14.7 Megapixel digital camera for the highest image quality.
-High powered 5x Optical Zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer plus a 28mm wide-angle lens gets you up close and personal to your subjects as well as captures more in your frame.

The New Canon EOS 5D Mark 2 - Affordable 21 megapixel!

Wanted a 21 megapixel full-frame digital SLR, but didnt want to spend $8k on the 1ds Mk3? Well, fear not, Canon has announced the second generation of their successful entry-level full frame SLR, and not only is it 21 megapixel, but it should sell for under $3k!!! That is huge!

"21.1 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor
The EOS 5D Mark II delivers an 8.3 megapixel jump in pixel count from the original 5D. This new sensor is said to be based on that of the EOS-1Ds Mark III (indeed it has exactly the same pixel count) but has several small changes, the hint being that it's actually slightly better." - www.dpreview.com

It boasts some exciting other features like live preview, a 50-25600 iso range, 1080p video capture capabilities with microphone input, hdmi output, the EOS integrated sensor cleaning system, and much more. Hop over to dpreview for the full preview.

And yes, I plan on getting one.

*Update According to a Canon press release:
"Pricing and Availability
The Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR camera is compatible with Canon EF lenses and is scheduled for delivery by the end of November. The EOS 5D Mark II will be sold in a body-only configuration at an estimated retail price of $2,699. It will additionally be offered in a kit version with Canon’s EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens at an estimated retail price of $3,499."

Been shootin'

Hey guys, been on the road doing plenty of picture snapping. Hope everyone had a good holiday weekend.

Thanks to Chris for taking sweet behind-the-scenes photos in Jersey last week and for building such a beautiful F150 that you will see on your newstands soon!

The New Canon EOS 50D

So, did you hear Canon recently debuted a new camera? It is pretty sweet you can now get over 15 megapixels for a little over $1,000! That is a great deal if you ask me considering when I bought my first 16 megapixel 1ds mk2 several years back it was nearly $8,000 for the body alone. One negative regarding the 50D is that it is not a "full-frame" sensor like its big brother, the 5D. It has a 1.6x conversion factor, which would be annoying to those shooters who like to shoot wide-angle lenses.  It does have Canon's newer sensor cleaning system and a large 3" lcd with live-preview.

For you aspiring professionals out there, this is not a bad entry-level pro for under $1500.

The highlighted features (from Canon's website):
-New 15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor with improved noise reduction, wide range ISO 100-3200 (H1: 6400, H2: 12800), 14-bit conversion for smooth color tones and gradations.
-Next generation DIGIC 4 Image Processor for faster processing, 6.3 fps up to 90 JPEGS using UDMA CF cards; 60 consecutive JPEGS or 16 RAW using standard CF cards.
-3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots/VGA) with multiple coatings for improved viewing and smudge-resistant protection.
-Enhanced Live View shooting includes Face Detection Live mode.
-9 cross-type high-precision sensors for accurate target subject acquisition and diagonal center cross-type AF point with f/2.8 and faster lenses.
-New Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction setting to automatically even the brightness across the image.
-Updated EOS Integrated Cleaning System with a fluorine coating for better resistance to dust.
-Creative Auto goes a step beyond full auto with on screen setting display.
-HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output for displaying full high-resolution images on a High Definition TV.
-Compatible with over 60 Canon EF/EF-S lenses and most EOS System accessories.
