An idea for powering your strobes/equipment on-location

I posted about this back in July, but people often ask me about power solutions when shooting on-location. Generators are great, but can be loud, intrusive, cumbersome, and messy. I decided to turn my truck into a portable power source. See below:

I worked with Hurley's Automotive in McLean, Virginia to design and install a portable power system in my SUV.

Many of my photoshoots take place on-location and I did not want to have to lug a loud and messy generator around. The solution was to install a second car battery and power inverter.

The long story short:
A second high-performance car battery was installed in an empty space in the engine compartment. A relay was connected to the car's alternator to ensure that when the truck is running, it charges the main car battery first, and the alternate battery next.

The power from the second battery is drawn from a 2-plug 1000 watt sine wave inverter hidden under the back seat. Sine wave inverters yield a cleaner current necessary to powering photo strobes than standard inverters.

The system has been working great so far and I can power a couple of strobes without running the car! I will work on more power in the future.

Eye-Fi Card, Wireless (WIFI) 2GB SD Memory Card

For those of you, like myself, that love their point and shoots (shout out to my beautiful Canon G9), you will love this product. For about $100, you replace your regular 2Gig SD card with the Eye-Fi 2 gig card. Now all you need is wifi access and your photos will automatically transmit to a popular web destination of your choosing with its built-in network! The Eye-Fi supports the following sharing/social networking/printing websites: KODAK Gallery, Shutterfly, Wal-Mart, Snapfish, Photobucket, Facebook, Webshots, Picasa Web Albums, SmugMug, Flickr, Fotki, TypePad, VOX, dotPhoto, Phanfare, Sharpcast and Gallery. The card handles the full-resolution jpg photos that you have taken and re-sizes them if the website you are transmitting to has a size limit.
